Life has its ups and downs, and it spares no one.

Significant events, such as divorce, miscarriage, the death of a loved one, or sickness, can take an emotional toll. When people are faced with these situations, they are often met with distress and feel at a loss at how to proceed.

There is no handbook for dealing with life-changing events. Everyone has to deal with the cards they are handed and make the best of it.

That is where coping mechanisms come into play.

Often used to manage painful or difficult emotions, they can be thought of as tools to help people adjust to the events they are experiencing and maintain a positive mental state. For some, this can take the form of exercise, for example, best described as a conscious attempt to reduce stress.

For Fatima Alexander, author of the books “The Art of Silence,” “The Faith of Hannah,” and “Finding My Way Back To Me,” writing became her escape.

“Writing became my solace. It became the way I worked through my family issues and came

up with solutions to keep everyone on track to a healthy life. As life started to improve, so did our mental well-being, and as I looked back and reviewed my notes, I noticed that there was a clear pattern of healing with all the ups and downs,” she explains.

Having dealt with the loss of her mother and niece and depression, she did the best she could to provide for her family and make sure that her two boys were taken care of. However, through words, she was finally able to take care of herself and reflect on her state of mind.

Talking about her first book, she says: “Understanding lying to myself couldn’t heal, but instead send me deeper into my abyss. Creating this book turned it all around and helped me to really see me and my flaws in a healthy and realistic way and do the work to change it.”

“My life was overwhelming, and I felt like I was being pulled in a million directions,” she recalls.

Finding her coping mechanism allowed Fatima to propel herself to new heights and find her true calling — helping others find the help and resources they need to take care of their mental health.

Her work, from all three of her books to her online lifestyle magazine coming out soon, has been curated to offer solace to those who find themselves in a similar situation she was in.

“The painful, meandering path that I took has allowed me to create something for those who might be experiencing similar challenges and gives them the tools they need to break free from those strongholds and chart a more fulfilling future,” she adds.

More than a mother, she is on her way to becoming the most inspiring thought leader of our generation.
